Gavin Ward and Arrow McLaren Part Ways After Record Season
In a significant move for the IndyCar team, Arrow McLaren has announced the departure of engineer and former team leader, Gavin Ward. Ward, whose tenure with Arrow McLaren began in 2022, leaves the team after a mutually agreed-upon decision with the team's executive leadership. His exit comes on the heels of a stellar 2024 season marked by record-setting achievements for the team.
Ward's contributions to Arrow McLaren were immediately felt upon his arrival. Tasked with transforming the team, he played a crucial role in its development. “We’ve grown significantly from where we were when he joined the team in 2022, and he was a big part of that transformation,” said Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren. Under Ward's guidance, Arrow McLaren achieved its most successful season in its history in 2024, securing the highest number of race wins ever for the team. This success was showcased through standout performances, although an Indianapolis 500 victory remained elusive during his tenure.
Impactful Tenure Comes to an End
Ward's departure is not just a loss for Arrow McLaren, but also marks the end of an impactful chapter in his career. Reflecting on his time with the team, Ward stated, "I leave Arrow McLaren after two years developing a people-first culture set to topple the 20-year domination of IndyCar's championship teams. We've made major strides during my tenure."
Ward's career is marked by experience and success in competitive environments. Before his IndyCar journey, he spent nine years with Red Bull Racing in Formula 1, where he contributed to four championship titles and celebrated over 50 victories. A highlight during his F1 stint included celebrating a winning constructor’s trophy at the 2013 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, marking a 1-2 finish for Red Bull Racing. Such accomplishments underline his strategic insight and leadership qualities that Arrow McLaren sought to capitalize on.
Path to Arrow McLaren
Ward transitioned to the IndyCar Series in 2018, initially joining Team Penske. His move to Arrow McLaren necessitated a nearly year-long hiatus as he awaited entry into the team. This patience bore fruit as he took on the task of elevating Arrow McLaren’s capabilities and performance. The team managed to clinch a season-high three races last year, with driver Pato O'Ward at the helm, marking a significant milestone under Ward’s leadership.
Despite parting ways, Arrow McLaren remains ambitious about its future. With new leadership acquisitions such as Tony Kanaan and Brian Barnhart, the team is poised to continue its progress. The driving roster for 2025 is set with Pato O'Ward, Christian Lundgaard, and Nolan Siegel, the latter having joined the team midway through the previous season.
Looking Ahead
As Ward departs, he is taking time to reflect on his next steps, both professionally and personally. "I plan to spend time with my wife and two daughters while I evaluate what's next in my career," he expressed. The racing world now waits to see where his next chapter will unfold, given his history of pushing teams toward unprecedented heights.
As Arrow McLaren eyes further success, the legacy left by Ward's work will undoubtedly serve as a foundation for future victories. Under Zak Brown's leadership, the team is expected to continue building upon the momentum forged during Ward’s role, aiming to compete fiercely against the dominant forces in the IndyCar championships.
