The Anaheim Ducks are making a significant transition in their broadcasting approach, promising enhanced accessibility for fans through a blend of direct-to-consumer streaming and local broadcasts.
In a bid to expand reach and engagement, 65 of the Ducks' games next season will be broadcast on an over-the-air channel in Los Angeles. Furthermore, all games will be available regionally on the Victory+ streaming service at no cost to viewers. Victory+ will operate as a free, ad-supported platform, ensuring that fans can catch the action without any financial burden.
Strategic Moves for Greater Accessibility
This strategic shift comes after the expiration of the Ducks’ contract with Diamond Sports Group at the end of the 2023-24 season. Diamond Sports Group, which is currently entangled in bankruptcy proceedings in Texas, was the Ducks' previous broadcaster. The new broadcasting arrangement, in partnership with A Parent Media, is designed to create more accessible viewing options for fans across the Ducks' regional territory, which includes Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, as well as Hawaii.
“We are so pleased to announce that fans in our entire television market, via stream or traditional television (cable or over-the-air) will see locally broadcast games free of charge,” said Ducks president Aaron Teats. The over-the-air broadcasts will be available on Channel 13, while the Victory+ app will be downloadable on smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones starting in September.
A Familiar Broadcast Team
Fans can also look forward to familiar voices in the commentary box, as Brian Hayward and John Ahlers will remain part of the Ducks' broadcast team. The continuity in the broadcasting personnel ensures that loyal fans will enjoy a seamless viewing experience.
“It is a significant organizational priority to connect Ducks fans with our entire market and for every fan in our region to have the opportunity to watch Ducks games without cost across multiple, accessible platforms,” Teats reiterated. The move underscores the Ducks' commitment to fostering a strong connection with their fanbase through enhanced media accessibility.
Regional Expansion and Competitive Positioning
The Ducks are not the only team making waves with their broadcasting strategies. The Florida Panthers are transitioning their local broadcasts to Scripps Sports, while the Dallas Stars have plans to stream their games regionally on Victory+. Notably, Diamond Sports Group, despite its financial troubles, will continue to carry games for eight NHL teams during the 2024-25 season and still holds agreements with the Los Angeles Angels (MLB) and the LA Clippers (NBA).
Jason Walsh, the chief operating officer for A Parent Media, praised the Ducks for their forward-thinking approach, stating, “The Ducks are already a significant content coordinator and have a team president with a broadcasting background.” The new deal with A Parent Media reflects an innovative approach that aligns with current digital consumption trends.
Looking Forward to a New Era
With the introduction of Victory+ and the increase in over-the-air broadcasts, the Anaheim Ducks are setting the stage for a new era of fan engagement. This multi-platform strategy not only makes it easier for fans to watch games, but it also opens up opportunities for the team to reach a broader audience. As the Victory+ app becomes available in September, fans can look forward to a more inclusive and comprehensive way to enjoy Ducks hockey.
The Ducks' commitment to accessibility and innovation in broadcasting is clear. As they gear up for the upcoming season, fans across their extensive regional territory can expect a fresh, unrestricted viewing experience, reinforcing the Ducks' status as a pioneering team in the evolving landscape of sports media.
