Veterans from the 2008 NFL Draft

The 2008 NFL Draft produced several notable players who continue to make an impact in the league today. Among them are Joe Flacco, Josh Johnson, and Calais Campbell, who have defied the odds to remain active contributors.

Joe Flacco: The Comeback Kid

Joe Flacco was named the 2023 NFL Comeback Player of the Year, a testament to his resilience and enduring talent. Currently playing quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, Flacco has experienced a resurgence in his career, leading his team with poise and skill.

Josh Johnson: A Steady Hand in Baltimore

Josh Johnson plays quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens. Known for his ability to adapt and perform, Johnson has had a career marked by versatility, playing for multiple teams throughout his tenure in the NFL. His steady presence behind center continues to provide stability for the Ravens.

Calais Campbell: A Veteran for the Dolphins

Calais Campbell plays as a defensive tackle for the Miami Dolphins. With six Pro Bowl appearances and inclusion in the 2010s All-Decade team, Campbell's career is decorated with achievements. His 2023 season with the Atlanta Falcons was particularly productive, featuring:

  • 6.5 sacks
  • 56 tackles
  • 10 tackles for loss
  • 42 quarterback pressures

Starting all 17 games in 2023, Campbell showcased his durability and relentless drive.

The Decision to Continue

As Campbell considered retirement, his love for the game played a crucial role in his decision to return for another season. Discussions with his family were also pivotal, as they provided the support he needed to continue pursuing his passion. Acknowledging that age has brought about changes in his game, Campbell emphasizes the importance of both strength and finesse in his current playstyle.

"I thought about [retiring],” Campbell admits. "It really came down to just talking with the family, my wife and kids. Because physically, and the desire and love for the game, has never left, not even a little bit. I have to learn how to use other parts of my game, bringing a lot more of the strength part but I still have enough finesse and everything else. I got a full box of little tools."

A New Opportunity with the Dolphins

Joining the Miami Dolphins presents a new challenge and opportunity for Campbell as he chases the elusive Super Bowl ring. The Dolphins' roster is robust, boasting six Pro Bowl players and additional key acquisitions that have further strengthened the team. Campbell sees this as a promising chance to achieve his ultimate goal.

"What keeps me going though is a love for the game," Campbell explains. "I feel like there's a really good opportunity here. Very talented team all over the field, both offense and defense. When you go through the roster and who you have, I just see so many people that I feel like we can really play together and really build that team chemistry you need and be a force to reckon with."

Reuniting with Anthony Weaver

A significant factor in Campbell's decision to join the Dolphins was the opportunity to reunite with coach Anthony Weaver, who served as Campbell’s position coach for two seasons. Their strong relationship and mutual understanding of each other's capabilities played a crucial role in Campbell's decision.

"The main reason I wanted to come here was because I really believe in who Anthony Weaver is as a coach and our relationship," Campbell says. "We talked a lot during the process, and he knows what I'm capable of doing. He understands my mind and how I see the game, and he trusts it."

The Pursuit of the Vince Lombardi Trophy

Campbell remains focused on one ultimate goal: winning the Super Bowl. Despite an impressive career, he has yet to capture a Super Bowl title. His best chance came when he played in Super Bowl XLIII with the Arizona Cardinals, but the championship has since eluded him.

"The main driver for me is to win a Super Bowl," Campbell states. "And I believe that with the talent and chemistry we have here in Miami, we have a legitimate shot at making that dream a reality."

As the 2023 season approaches, Campbell's determination and veteran presence are set to significantly impact the Dolphins' pursuit of the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
