Tennessee Titans Struggle in 2024 NFL Season

The Tennessee Titans have stumbled out of the gate in the 2024 NFL season, falling to 0-2 after a 24-17 defeat at the hands of the New York Jets in Week 2. The loss has cast a spotlight on quarterback Will Levis, who struggled with decision-making that proved costly during the game.

In a critical moment, Levis attempted a pass to running back Tyjae Spears, who fumbled the ball, giving the Jets an opportunistic edge they didn't hesitate to exploit. The error drew sharp criticism from Titans Offensive Coordinator Callahan, who didn't mince words in his postgame press conference, labeling the decision "dumb."

Levis’ Self-Reflection

Despite the criticism, Levis has displayed a commendable level of maturity and self-awareness. "He told us straight off, he's not a yeller and screamer, but he can be and there's certain situations that allow for that, and that definitely was one of those situations," Levis said. "I didn't bat an eye at it. I took the coaching."

Levis admitted to sharing his coach’s frustration and acknowledged the necessity for improved decision-making. "I was yelling at myself in my head the same way he was yelling at me," Levis revealed. "I know it's an emotional response that we all have after things like that. We were right back to it, and he had confidence in me on the next play taking that shot. That was cool to feel, coming back on the field after that turnover, even though we had another one after that. I don't have any problem with how he handled himself."

Risk-Taking Reputation

Levis’ propensity for risk-taking has been a double-edged sword. With three interceptions and two fumbles already under his belt this season, analysts suggest it was this very recklessness that contributed to his fall to the 33rd overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. Yet, Levis is not entirely unrepentant about his daring playstyle.

"I think a lot of people, when they hear gunslinger, they think about recklessness," Levis reflected. "I definitely feel like I was a little too reckless in my college career and tried to make some throws that I would want to take back. I changed that mentality a bit in my play last year. Just realizing at the level that I was playing at where I had to be that much more careful with the ball. I was proud of how I was able to protect it a little more than I did in my college years."

Team Goals and Future Outlook

Despite the rocky start, the Titans have set their sights on making a playoff run this season. "The goal for the 2024 Titans is to make a playoff run," Levis stated confidently. The team will face another challenge this Sunday as they host the Green Bay Packers. The Packers will be without their starting quarterback, Jordan Love, who is sidelined with an injury. Malik Willis is expected to fill in, altering the dynamics of the upcoming game.

The outcome of this weekend's matchup could be pivotal for the Titans. How Levis responds to the adversity of the early season will be crucial for the team’s prospects, and his apparent willingness to accept coaching and critique suggests he’s prepared to evolve and adapt.

As the Titans press on, they'll need Levis to find a balance between his natural daring and the prudence required to safeguard possessions. With the right adjustments, the journey toward their season’s aspirations is still within reach.
