Nakobe Dean: Rising Star in the Eagles' Defense
Sunday marked a pivotal moment for Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Nakobe Dean. Overcoming a challenging summer plagued by a foot injury, Dean delivered an impressive performance that signaled his readiness for the new season.
Last year, Dean stepped into the starting linebacker role, but this season he is making sure to earn it the hard way. Gradually working his way into first-team reps, Dean's talent and dedication were on full display this past Sunday. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has been particularly encouraging about Dean's progress, suggesting that his efforts are paying off.
During Saturday's practice, Dean showcased his abilities right from the start. On the first play of the 11-on-11 drills, he laid out running back Will Shipley after a pass reception and subsequently broke up a pass intended for DeVonta Smith. These plays highlighted the physicality that the Eagles have been seeking from their defensive unit.
Dean's physical approach is a direct result of the emphasis placed by new linebackers coach Bobby King. "He made it a main emphasis of block destruction, of blitzing because Vic's been calling our number, and tackling is a universal thing. We don't want no missed tackles, definitely not at the linebacker position, so it's been kind of a universal topic we've been on in camp," Dean noted. King's influence has enabled Dean to fully embrace and enhance his physical playing style.
The offseason was far from restful for Dean. "I didn't have a day off, I didn't have an offseason. It was five days a week until training camp started as far as getting that foot right, getting better. It's like I'm not back, I'm better," Dean explained. His rigorous regimen appears to have paid off as Dean's camp performance has matched his expectations. "I feel like I've had the kind of camp that I'm supposed to have," he said.
Dean's versatility as a linebacker is another feather in his cap. He is determined to excel in every aspect, whether it's covering, filling the A-gap, or blitzing the quarterback. "The type of linebacker I am, I feel like you need to be able to do everything. You need to be able to cover, you need to be able to fill that A-gap, you need to be able to blitz the quarterback. And I feel like those are things I do good," he asserted.
This determination to add a physical edge to every play is not just limited to drills. Despite the reduced tackling in camp, Dean emphasizes the importance of making his presence felt. "We don't tackle as much in camp, so you try to thud as much as you can. In past years, I feel like I two-handed touch always. I want to thud," he stated. His approach has been well-received by the offensive counterparts, who appreciate the toughness, especially since many offensive starters have not played in the preseason games. "Offensive guys have embraced it. They embraced the toughness. They want a feel. The offensive starters, they haven't played in the preseason (games). So the first time they get hit, they don't want it to be Week 1," Dean explained.
As the Eagles gear up for the season, Dean's progression is promising. His grueling offseason, dedicated training, and versatile skill set have brought him closer to securing the starting linebacker position for Week 1. While Dean acknowledges that he cannot control every aspect of the game, his focus remains steadfast. "I want to play. And I want to be the first one that plays. But I can't control that. The only thing I can control is what I come out here and do every day, work hard and continue to get better," he affirmed.
With the backing of Vic Fangio’s defensive philosophy and the guidance of Bobby King, Nakobe Dean stands as a testament to hard work, resilience, and relentless pursuit of excellence. Eagles fans can look forward to a season where Dean's physicality and versatility will be integral to the team's defensive strength.
