Jason Wright Set to Transition Roles with Commanders After 2024 Season
Jason Wright, a transformative figure in the Washington Commanders' front office, has announced that he will transition from his current role at the conclusion of the 2024 season. Wright will take on responsibilities as a senior adviser, with a primary focus on ensuring the completion of the Commanders' new stadium deal.
Wright first joined the team in 2020, back when it was known as the Washington Football Team. His tenure has marked a period of significant change and growth for the organization. One of his notable achievements includes overseeing the team's rebranding to the Washington Commanders in 2022, ushering in a new era with fresh identity and renewed vigor.
Under Wright's leadership, the Commanders went through a pivotal shift in ownership—from Dan Snyder to Josh Harris. Wright describes this period as transformative, not only for the franchise but for the broader community of fans and stakeholders. "I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished over the past four years. Together with an amazing team of professionals, we have taken this franchise through a period of immense challenge and uncertainty and have transformed it. We've set the table for an incredibly bright future under Josh's leadership," Wright stated.
One of Wright's most significant contributions has been his commitment to re-establishing the team’s culture. He emphasized the importance of respect within the organization and noted multiple improvements in fan engagement and experience. "Over just the past year, we've welcomed record numbers of fans back into our building, made meaningful improvements to the fan experience, re-engaged with corporate partners, and reconnected with the community. Most importantly, we re-established a culture of respect in this organization," Wright said.
Wright's tenure with the Commanders will be remembered for breaking barriers, as he is the first Black president of an NFL team and only the fourth former player to assume such a position. His leadership has clearly left a lasting impact, not just within the Commanders organization but also in the broader NFL community.
Looking ahead, Wright's primary focus as a senior adviser will be to steer the Commanders through the crucial stages of securing a new stadium deal. "Given all those accomplishments, that's why I am proud to announce I will remain with the team throughout the 2024-2025 season, with the same responsibilities. In particular, I look forward to helping the organization complete its new stadium deal," Wright shared.
This transition, however, does not signify an end, but rather a new beginning for Wright. He is also a finalist for the position of president with the Green Bay Packers, a testament to his exemplary leadership and the high regard in which he is held within the league. "This feels like the right moment for me to explore my next leadership opportunity. I'm extremely grateful to my Commanders colleagues, our fans, and this community for all that we have accomplished these past four years, and am looking forward to the start of a very successful season for the Burgundy and Gold," Wright expressed.
Wright's departure will undoubtedly leave a significant void, yet his influence and the foundations he’s laid promise a prosperous future for the Commanders under the new ownership and leadership. As he prepares to embark on a new chapter, the sports world will be watching closely to see what heights he will achieve next.
