Former lottery pick and four-time All-Star Kemba Walker has officially announced his retirement from professional basketball, bringing an end to a remarkable 12-season career in the NBA.
Walker, who was the ninth overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, confirmed his decision on Tuesday. He leaves behind a legacy of commitment, perseverance, and skill that saw him become one of the league’s more dynamic guards during his tenure. Selected by the then-Charlotte Bobcats, Walker quickly made a name for himself, earning three All-Star appearances with the franchise.
"I want to start this by thanking God for everything he has given me," Walker said in his heartfelt announcement. "Basketball has done more for me than I could've ever imagined, and I am super thankful for the amazing journey I've had. With that, I'm here to share that I am officially retiring from the game of basketball. This has all been a dream. When I look back, I still can't believe the things I achieved in my career."
Walker's Time in Charlotte
Starting his career in Charlotte, Walker quickly became a fan favorite and a cornerstone player for the Bobcats, who later rebranded as the Hornets. Over eight seasons, he consistently delivered, becoming the franchise's all-time leading scorer and earning a spot on the All-NBA Second Team. His days in Charlotte were memorable, but not without their challenges.
"Tough days, f---ing tough days, I can't even lie. Excuse my language," Walker admitted. "It was difficult. I couldn't see myself just being on another team. It was just hard. That's all I've known was Charlotte. Definitely some tough times. I had a feeling that I wasn't going to get the offer that I wanted, and maybe not close to it, because of cap space."
Boston, New York, and Dallas
In a significant career move, Walker joined the Boston Celtics in a sign-and-trade deal in the summer of 2019, which sent Terry Rozier to the Hornets. His impact was immediate, earning him another All-Star selection in his first season and helping the Celtics reach the Eastern Conference Finals during the NBA bubble. However, recurring knee soreness and other health issues began to take their toll during his stint with the Celtics.
Despite health setbacks, Walker continued to push forward, briefly playing for the New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks before concluding his NBA journey in 2023. Walker’s career averages stand at an impressive 19.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 5.3 assists over 750 career games.
Beyond the NBA
Walker explored opportunities beyond the NBA, spending a season overseas playing for AS Monaco. This international stint allowed him to experience the game from a different perspective and reaffirmed his love and dedication to basketball.
"I know I couldn't have made it to this point without my incredible support system around me. There are so many people to thank -- my mom, dad and entire family, my teammates who have become family, and the coaches who believe in me and brought out the best in me," Walker expressed.
Transition to Coaching
Walker’s journey in basketball is far from over. He will be joining the Charlotte Hornets' staff as a player enhancement coach under the guidance of new head coach Charles Lee. This new role will allow Walker to impart his wisdom and experience to the next generation of players.
"Basketball will forever be a part of my life so this isn't goodbye. I'm excited for what's next," he stated, signaling his transition from playing to coaching while maintaining a strong connection to the game he loves.
College Glory
Walker's illustrious career began even before his NBA days. He led the UConn Huskies to the 2011 NCAA title, averaging 23.5 points per game that season. His standout performance, including a game-winning shot to beat Pittsburgh in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Big East Tournament, is still fondly remembered by college basketball enthusiasts.
