Jimmer Fredette's Journey: From NCAA Stardom to USA Basketball 3x3 Glory

The basketball journey of Jimmer Fredette has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows, but his latest triumph in the realm of 3x3 basketball showcases his adaptability and perseverance. Known for his breathtaking performances at BYU, where he captured the Naismith College Player of the Year award and led his team to back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances, Fredette’s career has traversed various landscapes.

Fredette’s NBA tenure, which began when he was selected as the 10th overall pick by the Sacramento Kings in the 2011 NBA Draft, was a period marked by fluctuating opportunities. Reflecting on his professional journey, Fredette candidly said, "Obviously the NBA career was very up-and-down, but that doesn't just happen to just me. It's about trying to find the right fit at the right time in the right situation, and that didn't quite happen the way it could have for me."

Embracing New Challenges

However, Fredette's narrative is far from over. His recent accomplishments in 3x3 basketball punctuate a career resurgence. Fredette’s impact was instrumental in qualifying Team USA for the 2024 Olympics, a consolation after the Americans failed to make the cut for the 2020 Tokyo games. His exceptional play did not go unnoticed, culminating in him being named USA Basketball 3x3 Male Athlete of the Year in 2023.

The unique format of 3x3 basketball, featuring a half-court setup and a rapid 12-second shot clock, presents both opportunities and challenges. Field goals are worth one point, while shots beyond the arc earn two points. Crucially, possession changes after each basket, making strategy and precision indispensable. The first team to reach 21 points or the team with the most points after a single 10-minute quarter wins. If necessary, the game goes into overtime, where the first team to score two points clinches the victory.

The Team USA 3x3 Roster

Fredette’s teammates for the upcoming Olympics include Kareem Maddox, Dylan Travis, and Canyon Barry. Together, they form a formidable squad poised to make a significant impact. They will compete against the likes of Serbia, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, France, China, and the Netherlands in pool play. The top two teams in the group will automatically advance to the semi-finals, while the third to sixth-placed teams vie for quarterfinal spots to reach the final four. The medal round is slated for August 5.

A Competitive Landscape

Team USA’s road to Olympic glory will not be without stiff competition. At the 2024 World Cup, the Americans finished second, trailing behind Serbia. Serbia, currently ranked fourth globally, had previously secured a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics. Latvia, the reigning Olympic Champion, also figures prominently in the mix, having placed third at the 2023 World Cup.

For Fredette, the fervor and intensity of 3x3 basketball seem to resonate deeply. "The way this sport works, you either really like it or you don't like it at all. That people love it or hate it, I see the reasons why. It's difficult, there's a lot of travel involved all across the world. Sometimes you travel 36 hours for a tournament and if you lose two games you're done in like 20 minutes. There's just so much emotion in 3×3 basketball and it's different than five-on-five," he remarked.

Taking Full Advantage

Fredette’s mindset underscores his approach to each chapter of his career. "But as one door closes, another door opens, and I always tried to take full advantage of that by working hard and being prepared and believing in myself," he shared. This philosophy has enabled him to transition smoothly into the 3x3 format, where his skills and resilience continue to shine.

As the summer of 2024 approaches, Fredette and his teammates are gearing up to leave their mark on the Olympic stage. Their journey is a testament to persistence and the ever-enduring spirit of competition. For Fredette, every dribble, pass, and shot in the high-octane world of 3x3 basketball is another opportunity to etch his name in the annals of the sport.
